Facing Northwest

Sarah McLean

Dear friends,

My new office has two big windows. And a stained-glass dragonfly with blue eyes and purple wings. There are plants, and paintings. Carefully stacked books, and an assortment of notebooks and pens.

When I sit at my desk, I face Northwest.

I want there to be some meaning in that, some metaphysical resonance that will ground me and give me purpose and be like a firm hand on my back supporting me in taking my heart out through my fingers and tentatively sharing it with all of you. But I don’t know. Maybe it’s just how they planted the house.

I chose this house for the office. The small, bright, quiet space with a door that closes so I can think. A room of my own.

A room, now, where I can write.

For myself, and also for you. Whoever you are. Wherever you are.

I’m grateful for you.

With love,

Sarah
